Guitar Fest
Performer Marcus Sturrock is heading to Europe to make his name on
the festival circuit. A popular performer at Kulcha and Fly By Night, he has
just released Letting Go, his first solo album on CD..
He played in bands with or was guest artist for with Things of Stone and Wood,
John Butler Trio, The Angles, Wendy Mathews, Vince Jones, Daryl Braithwaite,
Tony McManus,
Angry Anderson, George Dobson Orchestra, Gangajang, Mark Seymour, Grace Knight,
Phil Manning and Chris Smither. Marcus played with members from bands such
as John Farham, Daddy Cool, Bee Gees, Kevin bloody Wilson, Rocky Horror Show.
He played in bands with PJ Hooker in the 1980's and sang backing vocals and
lead guitar, and composed with Sandfire for the M Rock Awards. He has composed
and played for
television
series
and
dance theater, teaches audio engineering and composition at TAFE.
The music of the Celts has influenced his style partly due to his father who
played the highland bagpipes. Other musical influences stem from funk, jazz,
irish, scottish and middle eastern.
Few believe that Marcus is playing solo for he has developed an unusual technique
in which he can double hand the strings of his guitar while coaxing a percussion
beat from the body. Marcus leaves on August 10, heading for Edinburgh Festival,
for folk celebrations in Ireland and a few gigs in Paris before rejoining the
festival circuit in Los Angles. Letting Go is available at Rio Records, Fremantle
Markets, Ashtari at E-Sheds and the Acoustic Guitar Centre in Perth and 78s
Records etc.

Not
a band but a showcase five dazzling
guitarists in a spectrum of styles show off their licks and talk the
tools of the
trade. Tony
McManus, Rodney Vervest (of the Ragabillys) Benard Carney, African
guitar wiz Ilan Zagoria and the talk of the Nannup festival, Marcus
Sturrock. Guitarists be warned -you may never be the same!
One of the highlights of the festival was a concert come guitar
workshop appropriately called "Guitar Heaven" Both performers and audience
left buzzing with inspiration. The venue was packed in and out onto
the street.
"This guy is an excellent guitar player who adds "oomph" and
emotion to his playing and feel in his vocals" Lobbie Lloyd, Mouth
